About Me:

Lately I have been working on a self portrait series that has had a rather…. large impact on me, most recently in this poem I wrote the other day which I thought I would share, here:

On the Edge of Myself

March 14, 2008

On the edge of myself is an invitation
An unknown, the hearing of a bird
And not seeing it, the toe
Dipped in the shallow river
And then, next? What….

The edge is in the maybe
The beginning of a gasp
The to-do list with three
Out of seven crossed off

The edge isn't deep
The edge is temptation
The edge is “I want to, but…”
The edge is “I'm scared and I…”

The edge is a beginning
The edge isn't an apology

The edge…. is….

*** sudden sojourn into ***

As a writing teacher, I always
Hesitate when someone makes
The wild proclamation that
They are blocked

The edge is infinite
Perpetually leading to the
Next edge

The edge has a drop off that
Might take me to places
That hurt and might take
Me to paradise and might
And might and might

The edge might contain
Exactly what I need
It might, you know

It does, you know
I know
The edge

What struck me as sort of… well, unique and intriguing… was that

I posted this poem to a group of spiritual poets, thinkers, appreciators of words and this woman wrote back in a backwards compliment.

I thought to myself, “There was a time when that would have
really hit me in the gut, landed hard, and perhaps kept me from
sharing any more of my poetry” but now, I realize… her comment is about her, not my words… and perhaps my words, in what she didn't find in them… was exactly what she was supposed to find because I know I found treasures in her exploration.

Life is grand.
